Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks), the conservative firebrand state senator who is seeking a seat in the U.S. House, is set to launch his first radio advertisement of the general election campaign.
"Liberals like Nancy Pelosi and Charlie Brown want to continue supporting federal laws that prevents us from tapping America's vast oil resources. That's how we got into this mess -and why gasoline prices are now breaking our family budgets," McClintock says at the beginning of the one-minute spot.
"America has nearly a trillion barrels of recoverable oil-more than three times that of Saudi Arabia-that Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Charlie Brown won't even let us touch. In fact, more than 94 percent of our territory remains off-limits because of this foolish prohibition. If we want to change this policy, we've got to change this Congress," McClintock says.
A McClintock spokesman said the ad buy was sizable. The spot will be airing throughout the Roseville-area district.
The Republican is facing off against Democrat Charlie Brown, a former Air Force officer who narrowly lost a 2006 battle for the seat against beleaguered U.S. Rep. John Doolittle (R-Glendale).
McClintock is coming off a hard-fought primary victory over former U.S. Rep. Doug Ose. Since then McClintock has come under attack for having previously filed statements of intent to run for the state Board of Equalization and lieutenant governor in 2010. McClintock has also been targeted for waffling on questions of whether he would campaign with the retiring Doolittle, who is under federal investigation for his ties to jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
But McClintock remains the favorite to retain the seat, which resides in a heavily conservative district that supported George Bush with 59 percent and 61 percent of the vote in 2000 and 2004, respectively. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan Washington tip sheet, currently lists the race in the "likely Republican" category.

Underground the oil still belongs to the people.
Drilling for oil off shore because of hight prices at the pump is short sighted to say the least.
While we may have large reserves off shore, (they wouldn't lie would they?) they belong to the people. Until the government gets the right cut out of the deal .... no deal.
Even then it isn't sold here, in America ... it goes to the international market.
So no more sweet heart deals for blood sucking big oil.
I agree Cool Mike. We
I agree Cool Mike. We elected these people to represent us, the middle/working class people, and all they seem to care to represent is the environment. Why don't they try looking at the needs of the people for a change?
Alternative energy? Not yet.
Some people on here don't seem to have a very good understanding of alternative energy. As much as I would love to get away from oil the technology is simply not there yet. Demand is huge, investments are pouring into these markets. Solar, wind, ethanol and others are all making rapid progress towards being feasible replacements for oil. But it's just not there yet.
Brown, Pelosi, and some of the commentators on here are clinging to their environmentalist roots, it would seem to me, with no regard of effects these energy prices have on the poor and middle classes. They are also probably in utter terror of the as-yet-undecided global warming.
Gotta love the brown
Gotta love the brown supporters on this post. Take a look at other blogs and you will see that brown and his supporters are in a wad over the ads.
I even heard that brown's people called some radio stations trying to get the ads pulled.
Brown's energy policy
I am proud to say I'm a conservative Democrat supporting Charlie Brown. I really appreciate his energy plan, and signed the petition on his homepage encouraging the federal government to invest the money it already spends on oil towards developing alternative energy. From a business perspective, its the right way to spark private firms and individual homeowners to pick up on this new and emerging market. Charlie Brown isn't beholden to the oil companies who say "drill here, drill now" as the solution.
And while Charlie is in support of drilling on the lands that already have been leased to the oil companies (they weren't leased because there wasn't oil there), he's smart enought to know that our offshore potential is better left untapped for strategic purposes.
McClintock Is Not Welcome In CD-4--Move Somewhere Else Tom!
America got exactly what it deserved when it elected George Bush the second time (the first one was a gimme and does not even count).
Pete Wilson (R-Former Governor) trashed Tom McClintock-R, as an obstructionist in the primary and he is part of the very GRIDLOCK that currently exists in Sacramento.
We sure don't need any more gridlock in Sacramento OR Washington.
Plus--McClintock is a carpetbagger who deserves to get a real job for once in his adult life! Perhaps he can get someone to write up a resume for him with all that tax-free per diem he took for years while living down the street from the Capitol for years.
Pathetic, even by Republican Standards.
What a move by Tom
What a move by Tom McClintock. Looks like Charlie Brown is in trouble to me. Even Barack Nobama has flip-flopped on the issue and left Charlie Brown and Nanci Pelosi to look like fools. I wonder what Brown will do now, maybe what Barack Nobama did and say that drilling is ok now? Haha, big trouble ahead for Charlie Brown and the Democrats.
Drill our way out, huh? Same
Drill our way out, huh? Same old garbage I always hear from the right. Brown and the democrats know what needs to be done to keep america clean, by land and by sea. The drill-drill radical right doesn't care because they live in the past. Alternative energy is the future and Brown knows that.
Yes to Charlie Brown!
Charlie Brown has got it right. It's unbelievable to me that there are still people out there who don't worry at all about our contributions to global warming. I've looked at Brown's energy plan and he opposes offshore drilling and will move us towards a sustainable future with alternative energy sources: wind, hydrogen, solar, etc.
Those of us without our heads in the sand know that the glaciers are melting, hurricanes are increasing, and the world is getting hotter. I only hope that Brown and Nancy Pelosi will stand firm against temporary public pressure, for our environment and our future.
McClintock is the firebrand conservative?
The fact that McClintock is the State Rep. from a Thousand Oaks running for congress two hundred miles away makes him a carpet bagger and professional politician who has termed out.
And Bush taking the district in 2000 and 2008, what does that have to do with anything? In case you hadn't noticed .... Bush is at 66% disapproval ratings. Even conservatives are sick to death of the way the country has been run under a Republican President and Republican Congress. Can you say doubled the National Debt?
And off shore drilling really, in California? Good call McClintock.
Change the Congress? What the Republicans are going to take back Congress? Mr. McClintock stop with the drugs already.
Still it's nice to know who Mr. McClintock calls master, big oil.
