A last hurrah for Speaker Nunez and the press

It’s something of a last hurrah in Sacramento today.

Democratic state Assemblyman Fabian Nunez is holding his final press conference as Assembly Speaker today, one day before heading out on a trip with legislative leaders to Mexico.

Nunez spokesman Steve Maviglio tells PolitickerCA.com that Nunez will use the press conference to roll out a package proposal for redistricting, term limits. Included in the package is a fundraising ban.

On Wednesday, Nunez will join Democratic Assemblymember Kevin DeLeon and Republican state Senator Abel Maldonado on a trip to Mexico which will include a meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

“It is critical that California continue to have a strong relationship with Mexico,” said Núñez in a statement announcing the trip. “Our delegation will help continue to foster a mutually beneficial relationship to bolster the economic prosperity of both California and Mexico.”

Nunez, who has been mentioned in some circles as a potential 2010 gubernatorial candidate, is facing term limits this year after occupying the Los Angeles-area seat for three consecutive terms.
