Mayor Heather Fargo's campaign manager had a terse response Tuesday to an attack from challenger Kevin Johnson earlier in the day over Fargo's move to review the city manager's performance.
"This is a city issue, therefore the campaign has no comment on the substance of Mr. Johnson's attack," campaign manager Dale Howard wrote in an e-mail.
Johnson had charged that Fargo's move was overtly political. The former NBA All-Star is challenging the incumbent for Sacramento's mayorship.
He has previously criticized Fargo for other city practices, such as examining whether to give pay raises to executive staff and cutting back on service hours at some city firehouses.
Fargo, mayor since 2001, has generally countered that Johnson is doing the bidding of some employee unions, while she is focused on her job.
