The campaign for state Sen. Tom McClintock again called on congressional opponent Charlie Brown to return money Brown got from scandal-plagued U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.).
In a press release from McClintock's (R-Thousand Oaks) campaign from Tuesday, it was noted that another Democratic congressional candidate, U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa), is returning money he received from Rangel.
The chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, Rangel has come under fire for failing to report income from rentals of a Dominican Republic beach house he owns.
Rangel has donated about $11,500 to the campaign for Brown, a Roseville Democrat making his second try at the 4th Congressional District seat.
"Taking and keeping thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from one of the most powerful and partisan Democratic congressmen belies Brown's theme of patriotism before partisanship," said McClintock campaign spokesman Bill George in a statement. "It's time for him to put his money where his mouth is and return the thousands of tainted dollars."
Todd Stenhouse, Brown's campaign manager, pointed out that Rangel has paid $11,500 in back taxes and has called for an independent ethics investigation into his own activities related to the beach house.
Stenhouse also pointed out that McClintock has received $2,500 from the House Conservatives Fund, a political action committee controlled by U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney (R-Florida). That fund was previously controlled by retiring 4th Congressional District Rep. John Doolittle (R-Roseville).
Both Feeney and Doolittle, Stenhouse noted, are under federal criminal investigation for their dealings with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
"We have not taken money from anyone under federal criminal investigation," Stenhouse said. "What was the question McClintock's campaign was asking again?"
Stenhouse added: "It's very clear Tom McClintock does not want to debate real issues in this campaign, like the economy. Like national security. Like energy."

The Venturian Candidate Politics of Distraction
When are we going to see one substantive comment by The Venturian Candidate on issues of real concern to the voters of CA 04; for example, energy policy, homeland security, foreign policy, health care, Social Security, and the list goes on and on.
What the Doolittle leftovers running McClintock's campaign are good at is attack politics -- the politics of smearing their opponent while hiding what their positions are on substantive issues. Their "issues" tab on The Venturian Candidate's web page is a joke. It should be embarrassing to all Republicans of good will (and there are many of you out there).
How about McClintock accepting Charlie Brown's challenge to match his donations to service organizations helping veterans and their families cope with the aftermath of multiple rotations to our war zones? Nope. Never done one thing of substance for veterans. Not. One. Thing.
