With certified results from Sacramento County Wednesday afternoon, Democrat Alyson Huber's Assembly campaign declared victory over Republican Jack Sieglock.
In that county, the southeastern part of which is in the 10th Assembly District, Huber had 52.46 percent of the vote, versus 40.37 percent for Sieglock. The vote difference was 12,408 votes in Huber's favor.
"When I started my campaign for State Assembly, many people said that this seat was not winnable," Huber said in a statement released by her campaign Wednesday afternoon. "But growing up I had overcome tougher obstacles. So I committed myself to this campaign and with the help of so many dedicated supporters we prevailed."
Andrew Acosta, a spokesman for Huber's campaign, said neither the campaign nor Huber had yet heard from Sieglock directly, though Sieglock had told other media outlets that he didn't expect to win.
According to the California Secretary of State's Web site as of 1:34 p.m., Sieglock led with less than 6,000 votes in San Joaquin County. Observers said it was unlikely that he could overtake Huber's overall lead with the remaining outstanding ballots.
Vote counts in Amador and El Dorado counties, which Sieglock both won, already appear to have been finished. Huber led the overall race with 505 votes as of 1:34 p.m.
