State Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) informally claimed victory in his congressional race this week, and said he will address the media Monday afternoon at his Roseville campaign headquarters to make a more formal announcement.
McClintock, who would move from his Southern California base to represent the 4th Congressional District, said in an informal e-mail message to supporters that he believed both that he had won the race and that the margin was too large for a recount to make a difference.
"In the meantime, I can only reflect on the fact that I will never be able adequately to thank all those who so selflessly volunteered their time and resources to bring us to this moment," McClintock said in the statement. "It is appropriate that the tally should be completed on the eve of Thanksgiving Day - it is a reminder of how much I owe to all those who rallied to the cause and to the voters of the Fourth Congressional District."
McClintock also acknowledged the effort from opponent Charlie Brown, a Democrat from Roseville, and congratulated him and his supporters for their hard-fought campaign.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the most recent time that the California Secretary of State had updated its results, McClintock led Brown by 1,666 votes, for 50.3 percent of the vote to 49.7 percent for Brown.
McClintock's campaign stated it did not believe there were enough outstanding votes to change the outcome. Brown's campaign manager said earlier in the week that the campaign would study its options after the vote totals were finalized next week.
