CA GOP blasts Democratic party unity, Obama policies

The California Republican Party took several shots at the Democrats and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) Tuesday, saying he's unable to bring his party together and unable to put together a policy that's new or workable.

"It's not Hillary Clinton's job to bring the party together," said state GOP chairman Ron Nehring, making reference to word of ongoing bitterness between the Clinton and Obama camps at the convention. "How is he supposed to bring the country together if he can't bring the party together, and is this any way to run a government if you can't run a convention?"

McCain better fit for California than Obama/Biden, GOP says

California Republicans painted an east/west divide Saturday in comparing the presumptive Democratic presidential ticket of U.S. Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden to that of presumptive Republican nominee and U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

"I think it's important for California to realize that we have two eastern senators on one ticket, and then you have Senator McCain, who is often referred to as California's third senator," said Bill Jones, chair of the state's delegation to the GOP convention and a former California Secretary of State, in a Saturday afternoon conference call with reporters.

Republicans jump on Speaker's remarks on Obama

The California Republican Party is circulating remarks that Assembly Speaker Karen Bass made to the Sacramento Press Club on June 5 regarding presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

At issue is Bass’s assertion that Obama should pick a vice presidential candidate who is “more centrist than he is.”

Asked by a reporter about if Obama’s should be considering a woman in his vice presidential search, Bass responded, “…I think that he needs to take his time and be thoughtful and identify who his vice presidential candidate should be. And I don't think, and I'm going to be concerned about, if there's a drum beat to try and force him to pick a candidate, whether we're talking about Hillary Clinton or anybody else frankly. I don't think that's the way it should be done. I was happy to see this morning that he's identified several people, including Caroline Kennedy, who's going to help vet who his candidate will be.”

California Republicans beef up staff for presidential effort

With GOP leaders trying to make the Democratic-friendly Golden State competitive this fall, California Republicans have begun the process of filling out the party’s top political leadership positions.

The new additions, to be formally announced at a party board meeting this weekend, are designed to develop the party’s get-out-the-vote efforts in anticipation of Election Day.

“We are building the entire get-out-the-vote effort,” Bill Christiansen, the California Republican Party’s chief operating officer, told PolitickerCA.com. “We are building out the field staff little by little.”

Joining the state party’s “Victory ‘08” team is Dan Centinello, a regional director on Mitt Romney’s presidential effort, will head up the effort. Moises Merino, a five-year veteran of the California Republican Party’s political shop, will handle political duties. Mike Theisen, the Los Angeles field director in 2006, will man the political desk for the southern part of the state. Scott Broschart, who worked as a western Los Angeles field director for the party in 2006, will coordinate the 72-hour get out the vote program.

Steel: state GOP 'declares war' over Denham recall effort

The California Republican Party is ratcheting up the rhetoric on Democrats over their attempt to recall State Senator Jeff Denham, the former state Party chair Shawn Steel reports on FlashReport Friday morning.

“In a strongly worded conference call to Republican leaders and County Chairs, California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring declared war on Senate President Don Perata,” Steel writes. “Never in the history of California politics has an elected official been recalled for casting a vote against tax increases.”
