Jackie Speier kept her promise, beginning her career in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday with a scathing speech on the War in Iraq. Speier was sworn in yesterday as the Congresswoman from California’s 12th district, two days after she won a massive 77% in a special election to replace the late Tom Lantos.
Speier attacked President George W. Bush and the man the Republicans want to succeed him, John McCain: "The process to bring the troops home must begin immediately. The president wants to stay the course and a man who wants to replace him suggests we could be in Iraq for 100 years. But Madam Speaker, history will not judge us kindly if we sacrifice four generations of Americans because of the folly of one."
The speech has spawned one new political feud: Southern California Congressman Darrell Issa walked out of the House Chamber in protest.

Jackie Speier's debut
As a supporter of Jackie Speier, I think she should have used the occasion to strike a more conciliatory tone and offer to work together with everyone for the interests of the country. There would have been plenty of time to make a speech about Iraq. Instead, all she did was make enemies which is not what you want to do on your first day in office.
