House Speaker (corrected) Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) has been recently touting U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Texas) as her preferred choice to be U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) vice presidential running mate.
It's possible that Obama wanted this out there, and she's just being a good soldier, floating the trial balloon for the campaign.
But if her actions were unsolicited, what the heck is she -- one of the most powerful and influential Democrats -- doing putting this out there when Obama is presumably days away from announcing his veep? What good is it this far into the process?

Chet Edwards would be a great VP. Any running mate will be known over the course of a campaign, so the name ID is not significant right now. The question is how people will react as they come to know the person and as a former constituent, I think they would like Edwards a lot.
