Perennial presidential candidate Ralph Nader and his vice presidential running mate Matt Gonzalez, the former San Francisco Board of Supervisors president and Green party activist, were in the Bay Area last weekend for some campaigning.
Gonzalez narrowly lost a mayoral bid to Gavin Newsom (D-San Francisco) in 2003 -- an impressive showing for a Green party candidate, considering only 3 percent of city voters are registered Greens. But despite his relative popularity among Greens in the Bay Area and even beyond, that base of support is unlikely to transfer over to Nader's presidential run.
Progressives and other left-leaning activists really don't want to lose another election to Republicans. Even Ross Mirkarimi, a Green who managed Gonzalez's mayoral campaign, is supporting U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

Gonzalez will bring Greens & other progressives
Ross Mirkarimi who as you point out endorsed Obama wasn't Matt Gonzalez's campaign manager but his press secretary.
While some Mirkarimi and some other left leaning progressives have gone to Obama, a growing number of them are very disappointed in his campaign. His votes on FISA and the war are not OK with many who are moving to the Nader/Gonzalez ticket, especially, now that Nader and Gonzalez are on the ballot in Ca. with the Peace and Freedom party.
The sharp critique of Obama's voting record "Obama Craze: Count Me Out" written by Gonzalez analyzes his votes and contrasts it with his campaign rhetoric. It is this kind of well informed commentary that is attracting to their campaign Greens and other progressives who don't want to waste their vote. A recent CNN poll said 6% would vote Nader/Gonzalez.
