Former CA Governor Jerry Brown gave a broad hint at the Democratic convention that he’s OK filing lawsuits as California’s current Attorney General, but he wants more…and that more is probably going to be a return to the Governor’s chair in 2010.
Jerry’s political career began in 1969 when he bested a field of 140 candidates to win a seat on the newly formed Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees. A year later, he ran for Secretary of State and turned a sleepy record keeping office into the leading Ethics czar position in the Country. Four years later he ran for Governor, winning 2 terms. He also ran for President a few times and developed a reputation as both “Governor Moonbeam” and as a celebrity dater (singer Linda Ronstadt the most notable).
He dropped out of politics for awhile and then became Mayor of Oakland where he won respect from liberals and conservatives; law and order types and civil libertarians. His walk to the AG’s office in 2006 was easy.
Until his stuck zipper got in the way (it’s always down), L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was the hands down nominee and probable Governor. But his affair and subsequent divorce added to what most watchers see as a lackluster Mayoral performance, has opened the door for Brown…and maybe others.
