LA City Councilman Herb Wesson passed up what many consider to be a “walk in the park” opportunity to run for L.A. County Supervisor when Yvonne Burke announced her retirement.
The former California Assembly Speaker appears to have his sights set on becoming President of the City Council, either nudging aside current President Eric Garcetti, or perhaps pushing him aside might be a better phrase.
Some people say that this is the first step in Wesson’s greater scheme, to become L.A.s 2nd African American Mayor.
Meanwhile, the former stand-up comedian’s wife, Fabian (pronounced FaHbian) is said to be considering a run for the State Assembly when newly anointed speaker-elect Karen Bass’ is termed out in 2010.
Wesson’s sons are also involved in the “family business” which makes us wonder if a new political dynasty is in the making in California.

If Eric Garcetti left tomorrow to be Barack Obama's vice president, Herb Wesson would be about the eighth choice of his colleagues. He is barely checked in for the major issues and hardly shows up at City Hall. Besides, with Prop R having given his colleagues another four years, Garcetti is set for another term or two if he wants. Word is that after Garcetti, Huizar or LaBonge would go for it. And LaBonge would do much better than Wesson (who isn't very well-known citywide) in a mayor's race. As would Greuel, Garcetti, Hertzberg. Actually, Nate Holden would get more votes I think than Wesson. He should try and get some things done before thinking of moving on...
