City Councilman Ron Kaye?

Now that Daily News Managing Editor has been given the axe, many Valley leaders are wondering if his next stop might be the City Council seat now held by Greig Smith.

Smith has told many people that despite his being able to run for a 3rd term in 2009 that he plans to retire to teach at USC and enjoy his pension from his many years of working for the City. Smith’s COS, Mitchell Englander, has been considered the heir apparent, following in Smith’s own footsteps -- he was Hal Bernson’s longtime COS.

But the muckraking Kaye could put a serious crimp in those plans. Kaye is well-known and beloved in the Valley for leading the fight for Valley independence from the City and working to make sure that the Valley gets its fair share of City services, police, money and more.

A hard drinking mid-60’s journalist who harkens back to the days when reporters hung out in bars and received good stories from inside sources, Kaye might just want to have a second career inside the arena, rather than just commenting on the fight.

Alger will be going for this seat

My understanding is that long time activist Jim Alger will be making a run as well. He has been a thorn in the side of Smith and Englander for some time now, challenging them on the Landfill, a Walmart and other issues. Every time they go up against him, Alger feeds them their rear end so this could be fun.

You're mistaken.

Ron Kaye was Editor, not Managing Editor.
Also, it is pure speculation by the Los Angeles Times that Kaye will be running for City Council.

Editor, not ME

Ron was the editor, not ME, of the LADN. You know, the big cheese. Hard to take such speculation seriously when basic, and easily checkable, facts are wrong. Welcome to California.
